My pastel worked started around 1991 when I left the advertising business to follow my love of fine art.   I enrolled in a couple of portrait classes and rode my bicycle, with all my pastels and supplies stuffed into the paniers, to class a couple of times a week.   Working larger, because the sticks of pastel were larger than a pencil point, was such a joy!   To me, working in pastel is just an extension of drawing.   It is a matter of working with the media and learning how to use it to get the look you want.   As you see below there is a variety of styles and techniques.   I was tighter and more controlled in the beginning and have loosened up in the more recent years.
